Fannie Gipson grew up during the civil war in Liberia, she would help her grandmother prepare meals for the family, creating “something out of nothing.” When Fannie immigrated to the U.S., one of her goals was to share traditional West African cuisine. In 2012, she began catering from her home, bringing the distinct tastes of her homeland to the Kansas City area. In 2018, she opened Fannie’s African & Tropical Cuisine at 4105 Troost Ave. in Kansas City.

Fannie joined the Make Black Businesses Better program to help raise awareness about local Black businesses. “I have received incredible support since I joined the program,” said Fannie. “I have learned how to apply for a line of credit and about bookkeeping. I’ve seen great improvements.”
